Mysterious Whale Strandings Puzzle Scientists on Indian Shores

A bizarre phenomenon on the shores of India has scientists in a frenzy: Why are entire pods of whales stranding themselves and perishing in slow, agonizing deaths?

Something strange has been unfolding over the last two days on the Indian coast: a mass stranding of dozens of 'short-finned pilot whales' on the beaches of Tamil Nadu, India. It all commenced on the night between January 11th and 12th, when the whales began beaching themselves, ultimately leading to their demise. Rescue teams dispatched to the scene managed to save about 36 whales, but the remaining 80 succumbed, suffocating from a lack of oxygen beneath their hefty weight.

While this phenomenon usually occurs around six times a year on average, scientists are still in search of answers as to what causes these events. Could it be something disrupting their sonar systems? Watch the heart-wrenching footage:
