Many chains in the country have started selling vegan eggs, known as 'eggless eggs'. What are they really made of, and who is distributing them?

The vegan world is making history: the marketing of vegan sunny-side-up eggs or poached eggs, named Yo Egg, has begun in major chains.

 

What does it mean?

Vegan sunny-side-up eggs, also called "eggless eggs", mimic the texture and taste of regular sunny-side-up eggs but are made solely from plant-based ingredients. A variety of ingredients are typically used to achieve the needed texture and ensure an egg-like flavor. For example, you can find sunny-side-up eggs composed of the following materials:

  1. Soft tofu - Used to create the "white" of the egg due to its mild flavor and soft texture.
  2. Turmeric - Provides the characteristic yellow color and a subtle flavor.
  3. Egg substitutes - Like soy-based or other powdered egg substitutes used to add texture.
  4. Plant-based sulfur (Kala Namak) - This soft salt gives a sulfuric flavor similar to that of an egg and is used to enhance taste.
  5. Olive oil or other oils - For cooking and adding smoothness.
  6. Flour mixes or Konjac - Sometimes added to stabilize and add texture.
  7. Carotene tomato extract (Black salt) - To add a unique flavor that mimics the taste of the yolk.

In preparing vegan sunny-side-up eggs, these ingredients can be combined to create a texture similar to that of a regular sunny-side-up egg, with separate "white" and "yolk", and cooked on a hot pan until the desired outcome is achieved.

So, how much will this culinary 'delight' cost? Believe it or not, it is eight times the price of a regular egg.
