1. Rabbi Yaakov ben Meir, affectionately known as 'Rabbenu Tam' (abbreviated as R"T), was the grandson of Rashi and a prominent Tosafist.
2. His nickname 'Rabbenu Tam' derives from the biblical verse: "Yaakov was a wholesome man, dwelling in tents" (Genesis 25:27).
3. R"T was born in Lautere, Northern France. One of Rashi's daughters, Yocheved, married Rabbi Meir ben Shmuel of the city of Ramerupt. Rabbi Meir and Yocheved had three sons: Yitzchak, Shmuel, and Yaakov. These sons became the first Tosafists. The son Yaakov, Rabbenu Tam, became a leading figure in French Jewry and wielded significant influence in Ashkenazi Jewish communities.
4. During the time Rabbi Abraham ibn Ezra lived in France, he befriended Rabbenu Tam. In their correspondence, he refers to R"T as "the place of holiness and wonder."
5. R"T also communicated with other great Jewish scholars of his generation. He engaged in grammar studies and in the dispute between Dunash ben Labrat and Menachem ben Saruk, Rabbenu Tam supported Menachem, authoring the work 'Hachraot' against Dunash ben Labrat (who composed the poem 'Dror Yikra').
6. R"T's interpretations are the primary basis for all collections of Tosafot. He also authored "Sefer HaYashar," a two-part compilation of responsa and Talmudic commentaries.
7. Additionally, R"T wrote on topics related to writing Torah scrolls, gittin (divorces), and a cycle including prayer laws, several poems, and a grammar book.
8. The Maharshal (Rabbi Solomon Luria) wrote that "eighty Tosafists gathered in one session before Rabbenu Tam, and each one reached instruction... and countless students." Among his illustrious students were Rabbi Joseph Bekhor Shor, Rabbi Eliezer from Metz, and Rabbi Yitzchak the White.
9. The two prevailing opinions regarding the order of the parshiyot in tefillin are traditionally referred to by the names of Rabbenu Tam and his grandfather, Rashi. To this day, there is a distinction between 'Rashi's Tefillin' and 'Rabbenu Tam's Tefillin.' Although the custom is to wear Rashi's tefillin, some are stringent and wear both sets of tefillin, either sequentially or simultaneously.
10. Rabbenu Tam is buried alongside his brothers and other Tosafists in the ancient cemetery in the city of Ramerupt.
