When Breaking Bread on Lechem Mishneh, Should One Cut the Upper or Lower Challah?
While making the blessing, one should hold both loaves, and after reciting the blessing of Hamotzi, one should cut from the lower bread [Yalkut Yosef p. 753]. Kabbalists, however, have the custom to cut the upper one [Sha'ar HaKavanot and Ben Ish Chai]. Each person should follow their own custom.
Some say that one should not place the challot one on top of the other as this causes great damage, and therefore one should place them bottom against bottom [Chemdat Yamim]. However, these words were only said to those who adhere strictly [Yalkut Yosef p. 757].
