Is it permissible to pray an early Maariv and sanctify before Shabbat starts?
It is customary to pray Maariv earlier than on regular weekdays. From the time of plag haMincha, which is one and a quarter hours before nightfall, one can pray Maariv, accept Shabbat, and eat immediately.
Nonetheless, it is good and proper to eat another olive-sized piece of bread after the time of nightfall. When praying Maariv before nightfall, the rabbi or gabbai should announce after the prayer to remind the congregation to recite the Shema again after nightfall. [Yalkut Yosef 267].
