Leek, or *karti*, or *loof*—it doesn't truly matter what you call it, as long as you invite it into your daily dish. It’s about to work wonders for your body.

This vegetable is part of the symbolic foods on the table during Rosh Hashanah, and though it might not be the most appealing at first glance, trust us—you'll want to know what’s inside:

  • Magnesium
  • Vitamin A
  • Manganese
  • Vitamin B6
  • Vitamin C
  • Folic Acid
  • Vitamin K
  • Iron

But there's more. Studies have shown that daily leek consumption fights cancer cells and prevents their development in the body, thanks to a substance called 'allyl sulfides'—which excels in detoxifying, locating, and eradicating cancer cells while preserving healthy ones.

"If you start consuming leeks every day, preferably in their natural form in salads, you’ll immediately notice changes in your body," explains Indian blogger Najeeb on his blog. "Leeks are rich in flavonoids that help protect your blood vessels from free radicals. They also guard against heart diseases, lower blood pressure, reduce the probability of blood clots, and prevent strokes and heart attacks.

Leeks are also packed with antioxidants called polyphenols, which are capable of eliminating any 'old' and 'tired' cells and rejuvenating the skin. Being a type of onion, they act as a barrier in the body against inflammations and infections, preventing them from reaching healthy cells.

Leeks are extremely beneficial for pregnant women as well, as they contain natural folic acid known as 5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate, which, when taken daily, reduces the chances of genetic defects in the newborn.

Two exceptional compounds they possess are lutein and zeaxanthin, which essentially preserve eye tissue and vision by filtering harmful light rays and protecting against cataract development due to age-related changes.
