The formation of kidney stones is gradually becoming a common medical issue, mainly due to poor dietary habits.
Under normal conditions, there is a mechanism in the urinary system that prevents crystal formation. However, when this mechanism fails, stones are formed.
When the body's fluid levels decrease, the concentration of salts increases, and the amount of substances that inhibit stone formation decreases. Lack of fluids also leads to an increase in minerals in the kidneys, heightening the likelihood of kidney stone formation.
Avoid eating foods containing oxalic acid, such as peanuts, chocolate, cola, green tea, and coffee.
Animal fats cause the body to secrete calcium, which can lead to calcium accumulation in the kidneys, so limit all types of meat consumption.
Avoid large amounts of calcium from dairy products, which are not easily absorbed in the digestive system and may end up accumulating as waste in the kidneys.
Large amounts of white sugar cause calcium to leach from the bones and transfer to the urinary tract.
Beware of consuming products with sugar, especially soft drinks containing phosphoric acid, which increases kidney stones.
Salt, caffeine, and alcohol dehydrate the body and increase the concentration of minerals in the urine. Therefore, it is advisable to limit salt intake and reduce caffeine and alcohol consumption.
Weather can also have an impact. When it is very hot and dry, body fluid levels decrease. Therefore, maintaining hydration by drinking water is essential.
Sleeping position may influence kidney processes. If stones develop on only one side of the body, consider sleeping on the opposite side.
To prevent stone formation, it is important to reduce, or at least moderate, animal protein consumption and adopt plant-based foods as protein sources, such as legumes, beans, chickpeas, lentils, peas, and also nuts and almonds.
Lemon juice with warm water is good for prevention and removing stones.
Consume two tablespoons of pumpkin seeds daily. Pumpkin seeds have been found to reduce the risk of stone formation.
Parsley can be made into an infusion or consumed fresh. Watermelon also helps clean the urinary tract.
A lack of magnesium has been associated with recurrent kidney stone formation. Magnesium is found in leafy greens, almonds, apples, buckwheat, and soy.
A vitamin C supplement can help, although for some individuals, vitamin C might actually accelerate stone formation.
