Looking to start a diet? A fascinating study published by the National Library of Medicine claims that black pepper, better known by its scientific name Piper nigrum, aids in weight loss.

The research was conducted in the Biochemistry Department at Annamalai University in India, and the researchers were amazed to conclude that indeed Piper nigrum contributes significantly, among other things, to the prevention of fat cell accumulation such as phospholipids, lipids, and cholesterol.

Further studies conducted by researchers from Sejong University in South Korea and Shizuoka University in Japan examined the impact of black pepper on mice and found that it prevented fat accumulation in the body, even though they received fatty food every day.

Researchers also discovered that black pepper significantly slowed the metabolic rate in the mice's bodies.

The research went further to examine the long-term effects of black pepper on antioxidants and enzymes, concluding that it drastically reduces oxidative stress—a condition of imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants.

Oxidative stress is a complicated condition that could be fatal in the long run because free radicals multiply and harm the body.

Now to the 'fine print': While it is a spice that helps and contributes to weight loss, the spiciness of black pepper limits our ability to consume it freely. Healthy individuals who over-consume black pepper may suffer from external skin irritation and throat burning, as well as unnecessary kidney irritation.

Therefore, the recommendation is to use black pepper in moderation, and definitely consult your family doctor about the quantities, should you wish to lose weight.
