Suffering from Gum Inflammation? Research Suggests a Natural, Healthy, and Tasty Way to Solve the Problem
Gum inflammation is an unpleasant condition that requires deep attention to several important aspects of your oral health. What causes its formation and what does alternative medicine offer as a way to cope with the problem?

Gum inflammation is indeed an unpleasant condition, requiring careful consideration of various vital aspects of your oral health.
The causes of gum inflammation are numerous:
- Missing teeth in the mouth without a crown placed on them
- Loose crowns that were not fitted properly
- Teeth grinding
- Insufficient hygiene
- Alcohol and smoking
- Mouth breathing
- Low levels of vitamin C and multivitamins in the body
- Prolonged medication use, and more
Clinical studies published in English in the 'National Library of Medicine' claimed that various herbal plants containing alkaloids could aid in healing and preventing gum inflammation. Researchers concluded, for example, that licorice and green tea contain polyphenols and glycyrrhizic acid, both of which help with this.
Why is it important to treat gum inflammation?
Studies have shown that gum inflammation may lead to chronic diseases, preterm births, heart damage, dementia, affect blood sugar levels, impair the immune system, and more.
What are the treatment methods?
Conventional medicine advocates the following methods: regular visits to a dental hygienist to remove plaque from the teeth, regular mouth rinses with salt water, and when necessary - antibiotic treatments, brushing teeth daily - twice a day, and cleaning the tongue.
Alternative medicine offers several ways to handle gum inflammation, but we will focus on one particularly interesting study that suggests increased consumption of grapefruits as a way to tackle the problem.
The study, conducted by researchers from Germany, claims that eating a whole grapefruit in the morning and another in the evening reduces the likelihood of developing gum inflammation and alleviates the bleeding associated with it. The study involved 58 people who consumed two grapefruits each day - one in the morning and one in the evening, and all participants without exception reported a reduction in gum bleeding.
Simultaneously, blood tests conducted before and after the treatment showed that the vitamin C levels in their bodies were very low before the treatment compared to the levels found afterward. "Unfortunately, gum inflammation is one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults," says Dr. Gordon Watkins of the British Dental Association. According to him, "this study reinforces the message that we need to consume more vitamin C."
