Good nutrition is the most important factor in maintaining brain health. The right raw materials that will lead us to a healthy body and brain are real, whole, fresh, pure food that is not processed and free of chemicals, hormones, and antibiotics.
The most important component in the body to ensure normal functioning of the cells and the brain is the fatty acid from the "Omega 3" group. Omega 3 acids are derived from nature. They are hard to find in today's modern world, where everything is processed. The only real source of Omega 3 is sea fish. The smaller the fish, the healthier it is, and it does not contain mercury or contaminants. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential components of the membrane that surrounds each of the hundred trillion cells in our body. Without these fatty acids, biological communication is impaired, and the cells cannot transmit messages to each other.
The two most important Omega 3 fatty acids are DHA and EPA. The brain is mostly fatty, and 60% of it is composed of DHA.
Nowadays, people consume more Omega 6 fatty acids, which are not healthy, and processed oils, including corn, soy, or sunflower oil, as a substitute for fish-derived Omega 3 acids.
The ratio between Omega 6 and Omega 3 fats in our foods has increased in recent years from 1:1 (one Omega 6 molecule for every Omega 3 molecule) to 1:10 (one Omega 3 molecule for every 10 Omega 6 molecules).
The effects are devastating. Our brain cannot function without these fatty acids, and therefore low levels of these fats cause numerous impairments, such as depression, anxiety, attention deficit disorders, autism, learning difficulties, and numerous neurological diseases. These fatty acids significantly impact cognitive learning development, improved vision, immune system function, fetal brain development, and more. Therefore, Omega 3 supplementation is important for pregnant women and for preventing heart disease and cancer.
Other studies have found that EPA from Omega 3 helps treat postnatal depression.
Omega 3 fatty acids benefit heart health, prevent arrhythmias and stroke, reduce inflammation and prevent blood clots. They also balance blood sugar levels.
Omega 3 can be taken as a dietary supplement. It's preferable to keep it refrigerated and to buy from a store that keeps it refrigerated for better quality.
