The American blog "The Healthy" recently published an interesting article about the great effectiveness of tea bags in healing skin burns, thanks to the amazing chemical compounds they contain called tannins. "Tannins belong to a larger group of compounds known as polyphenols, but their molecules are generally much larger than those found in other types of polyphenols."
Tannins are found in a wide range of edible and non-edible plants such as spices, nuts, seeds, tree barks, leaves, fruits, and legumes, and are generally produced by plants as a natural defense against pests.
Tannins are present in both black and green tea, but the amount and their effect on our bodies depend on how the tea is produced.
In one YouTube video, a user is shown trying the tea bag in real-time on a burn received from a hot drink, and the results are amazing: within minutes, the user reported not feeling pain and showed the camera how the redness and swelling on the hand were reducing, thanks to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of the tannins.
What are the downsides?
Tannins can cause nausea if consumed on an empty stomach and may interfere with the body's ability to absorb iron from certain foods. Therefore, if it's important for your body to receive iron from the food you eat, to get the most out of tea rich in tannins, it is important to consume it separately from iron-containing foods and drink it in moderation.
What else can you do with a used tea bag?
1. Cleaning a sink stained with oil spots - fill the sink with water, toss in a tea bag or two, wait a few minutes, and scrub the sink.
2. Cleaning plastic containers from grease residues - fill the container with a little water, place a tea bag and a paper towel inside, pour in some dish soap, mix everything with the lid closed, and rinse with lukewarm water.
