If you find yourself wondering what to eat before the Yom Kippur fast, it's important to know a few golden rules that will ease your decision-making. Many of us tend to grab anything in sight during this pre-fast meal out of 'fear' of becoming hungry and thirsty mere minutes after eating.
However, when we consider what occurs in the body on an energetic level when we choose to eat wisely, it's clear that we can complete the fast successfully both spiritually and physically, with Hashem's help.
So, what should you eat to avoid overloading your digestive system while ensuring your stomach doesn't signal distress during the fast? Before we delve into the 'what to eat,' it's essential to note that these guidelines apply to generally healthy individuals who are not on regular medication and do not require a special diet due to any health issues.
On the day of the fast - Make sure to eat a breakfast consisting of protein, bread, and cheese. Eat a reasonable portion but avoid overeating, as your next meal should be about four hours after breakfast and should also include a serving of protein.
What should you avoid? Avoid carbonated drinks, foods with strong flavors such as amba, zhug, mustard, various soup powders, pickles, overly salty foods, and generally strong-flavored foods that stimulate the taste buds (such as sauces).
What should you eat during the meal itself? Potatoes, quinoa, rice, peas, sweet potatoes, zucchini, eggplant, chicken, meat, baked or cooked fish, noodles, and fresh vegetables. These foods (preferably not overly spiced) decompose slowly in the body and ensure a sense of fullness for an extended time.
Wishing an easy and meaningful fast to all the House of Israel!
