After a 22-year follow-up of nearly 100,000 people, researchers found that while consuming plant fat reduces the risk of heart disease and mortality, animal fat consumption significantly increases the risk of illness and mortality.

While fat consumption can lead to arterial blockage and, God forbid, death, it is nevertheless essential for the body's existence. A new study attempted to answer the question of which type of fat is healthier/more dangerous — plant fat or animal fat. The study's findings were presented at the American Heart Association conference in New Orleans.

The study's results showed that plant fat (oils found in vegetables - avocado, nuts, and seeds) reduces the risk of death from heart diseases and other ailments. In contrast, animal fat (found in meat, eggs, and dairy products) is associated with an increased risk of illness.

According to the study, it was found that those who consumed a higher amount of plant fat had a 16% lower risk of mortality compared to those who consumed a lesser amount of the same type of fat. In comparison, those who consumed a high amount of animal fat had a 21% higher risk of suffering from heart diseases and other illnesses, compared to those who consumed less animal fat.

Researchers also found that replacing a small amount of animal fat with plant fat could reduce mortality risk by 10% to 15%.

According to the researchers' hypothesis, the protection stems from the nutrients in plants. These are plant sources rich in vitamins, polyphenols, and unsaturated fat — long fatty acid chains known to be heart-healthy, and not necessarily from the fat itself. However, animal fat sources can contain high levels of saturated fat and cholesterol, which cause heart diseases.

L'shabbat from the plant fat, both poly and monounsaturated, is of great nutritional value and is an integral part of a healthy, balanced diet. Healthy fat contributes to maintaining balanced cholesterol levels and is known as a protector against cardiovascular diseases and helps maintain proper metabolic activity, according to the clinical dietitian, Naama Leon.

"Many people avoid incorporating fat into their diet due to its high-calorie content and the fear of gaining weight," she emphasized, "however, its integration is essential even in weight loss processes. It's advisable to include in the diet on a daily basis fats like avocado, whole sesame tahini, and even natural peanut butter, of course, all in moderation."
