Concerned About Health? You Might Want to Avoid Eating Ice Cream in the Coming Years

Many of us love ice cream in the summer (and winter too), but according to an article published in the New York Times, it's important to know that ice cream has physiological effects that may endanger the cardiovascular system.

Many of us love ice cream in the summer (and winter too), but according to an article published in the New York Times, it seems that ice cream also has less pleasant aspects concerning our health.

In an article published last week in the New York Times, Dr. Martha Gulati, head of the cardiology department at the University of Arizona, claims that: "Addiction to ice cream has physiological effects that may endanger the cardiovascular system." However, she added: "But let's be honest with ourselves, millions of people have eaten half a quart of ice cream, including myself, and nothing happened to us."

Though most people who eat ice cream will indeed continue to lead their lives normally with no health implications, for some, eating ice cream poses a health risk. According to Dr. Gulati, those at high risk for heart disease or those who have previously suffered from heart disease should exercise extreme caution with calorie consumption or sugary desserts. She explained that this caution is necessary because eating ice cream raises blood pressure and increases heart rate. This process can cause blockages in the body and reduce blood flow.

Dr. Gulati went on to discuss the "heavy" addicts to ice cream, those who consume a quart of ice cream alone, saying that this habit will lead to weight gain, thereby increasing their risk of heart and vascular diseases.

A few years ago, a study was conducted in Israel with 209 participants who had a history of heart attacks. The study results showed a tendency to experience a heart attack after consuming foods high in fat and sugar.

"It's okay to eat ice cream from time to time," Dr. Gulati concludes, but warns, "However, we recommend eating in moderation to avoid becoming addicted to the sweet taste."
