Practical guidelines for educating children about Sukkah observance during the festival

AA

Is there an obligation to educate a minor to eat in the Sukkah?

A child of about five or six years old must be educated in the mitzvah of Sukkah, and it is forbidden to give him bread or cookies larger than the size of an egg outside the Sukkah.

Even a woman who is not obligated to dwell in the Sukkah is rabbinically forbidden from feeding a minor outside the Sukkah [Yalkut Yosef Siman 640, Chazon Ovadia page 152].

Should a minor be educated to sleep in the Sukkah?

Ideally, minors should be educated to sleep in the Sukkah, but if it is difficult for a child to sleep in the Sukkah with his father, he may be exempted [ibid].
