Essential guide to Sukkot observance: when travelers are exempt and key obligations during the festival

AA

Are those engaged in a mitzvah exempt from the sukkah?

Those engaged in a mitzvah, such as one who goes to honor his rabbi during the festival, are exempt from the sukkah even if they happen to come across a sukkah on their way (Chazon Ovadia p. 163).

Travelers for livelihood purposes are exempt from the sukkah, therefore a person traveling for work on a bus from city to city may doze off, but if one is traveling for leisure during the holiday - one should not be lenient (Chazon Ovadia p. 166).
