Thousands of children and people worldwide suffer from various allergies, one of which is a peanut allergy – a severe response to peanuts that can be life-threatening.
For years, the medical world has been trying to find satisfactory solutions to food allergies, and now researchers from Australia claim they have found a cure for children suffering from peanut allergies.
A clinical trial involving dozens of children found that in one-third of them, the condition disappeared completely after receiving the treatment – an experimental probiotic vaccine called Lactobacillus 48 rhamnosus, with peanut protein.
"After the treatment, 70% of the children were able to eat peanuts without suffering from allergies and severe reactions, as was the case before the treatment," said Prof. Mimi Tang, one of the leaders of the trial.
According to her, some children had to strictly avoid peanuts, examining every food with great caution and anxiety. After the treatment, which lasted about a year and a half on average, many of these children live like regular kids, with no trace of the dangerous allergy.
The secret at the center of this groundbreaking treatment is the researchers' tactic, which instead of trying to prevent the allergen itself, actually reprogrammed the immune system's response to peanuts.
Researchers, led by Prof. Tang, now announce that this is a significant step towards treating additional allergies to other types of food.
