As coffee lovers, you've probably heard numerous pieces of advice on how, why, and when to drink it. However, few recommendations have been endorsed by dozens of dietitians and nutritionists like this one, signed by a whole team from Sydney, Australia.
After countless studies, the research team reached a clear conclusion: you should postpone your first morning coffee (regardless of type) for two to three hours after waking up. "When we wake up in the morning, our cortisol levels are at their peak," explains Lindsay Cohen, one of the researchers.
Cortisol, for those who don't know, is a hormone that significantly affects the metabolic rate in our bodies, and caffeine significantly increases its production. "Therefore, if we drink coffee immediately upon waking, it leads to a decrease in cortisol function in the body, creating a dependency on caffeine to wake up instead of waking up naturally with the help of cortisol," Cohen explains.
What happens when you delay coffee for two hours after waking? "The cortisol level remains as it should be at this time of the morning, helping to drive our body and assist metabolism. I know there are people who drink coffee even in the evening, but my recommendation is to have the last cup of the day about six hours before going to sleep."
