Not all home remedies for treating joint pain or gout are effective. Nevertheless, this doesn't stop people suffering from these conditions from trying various methods. One method circulating online and recommended by many alternative medicine practitioners is treatment using cabbage.

How can cabbage help with joint pain? Numerous studies, including those conducted at the University of North Carolina and the New York University Medical Center, have found that cabbage contains essential substances known as phytonutrients as well as antioxidants called anthocyanins and glutamine, which have remarkable anti-inflammatory properties.

These properties have been proven to be very effective in treating pain and swelling in joints, and some claim it can also provide relief for osteoarthritis (a chronic joint disease whose most prominent symptom is cartilage wear in the joints).

The latest study conducted at the University of North Carolina suggests that the characteristics of cabbage may even fight various types of cancer.

So how do you use cabbage to ease joint pain?

(Important Warning: Consult your doctor before starting the treatment, as there may sometimes be an allergic reaction to the treatment)

1. Take several leaves of red or green cabbage and wash them thoroughly with water.

2. Cut off the tough parts of the leaves, leaving only the soft parts.

3. Gently squeeze the juices from the cabbage and let it dry briefly.

4. Wrap the cabbage in aluminum foil and heat in the oven for a few minutes until the cabbage leaves are slightly warm.

5. Place the warm cabbage leaves on the desired area and wrap them using a bandage, gauze, or another method to keep them stable on the area.

6. Wait about an hour and repeat the action three times a day, or according to your doctor's recommendation.

Note: You will only feel the effects of the treatment the following day, and although an allergy to cabbage is quite rare, remove the leaves and wash the area well with water if you feel any discomfort, itching, or tingling during any stage of the treatment.

Dietary Recommendations for Easing Arthritis Pain:

A balanced diet containing adequate amounts of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, reduced sodium, and fish is the best recommendation for people suffering from the problem.

Follow these guidelines:

  • Maintain a low sodium (salt) diet.
  • Avoid fatty foods that promote inflammation.
  • Prefer using natural oils such as palm oil and coconut oil.
  • Completely eliminate white flour and its products, as well as white sugar and its products.
  • Refrain from consuming animal proteins, including chicken, beef, and dairy products. These foods increase the production of prostaglandins, which are in other words, promoting inflammation.
  • Consume omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Make sure to drink 8-10 cups of mineral water a day.
