An Israeli study conducted by researchers from Tel Aviv University demonstrated that insulin resistance, which can lead to diabetes development, contributes to cognitive decline and memory diseases.

The research findings indicate that insulin resistance also contributes to accelerated cognitive decline – after 20 years. "People with insulin resistance, with or without diabetes, are at increased risk of accelerated cognitive decline after two decades," the researchers stated. "The cognitive impairment is mainly in the area of memory and executive functions."

According to the researchers, "These are very important findings that open up the possibility of preventive behavioral and medicinal treatments to preserve cognitive function and prevent dementia development."

The study was conducted on a group of about 500 heart disease patients, whose insulin resistance levels were assessed using a metric called the Homeostasis Model Assessment, or HOMA, which measures fasting insulin and glucose levels in the blood. The researchers applied a series of computerized tests, assessed the patients' cognitive function levels, and found that subjects in the top quartile of the HOMA measure were at increased risk for accelerated cognitive decline 20 years later.

"These results emphasize the need to deepen research into the effect of physical activity, diet, and medications that reduce insulin resistance on dementia," explained Prof. Tane from the research team.

The message is crystal clear: "If you wish to prevent insulin resistance and protect your brain into old age, exercise regularly, maintain a balanced and healthy diet, and manage your body weight. And if you already suffer from pre-diabetes, meaning your blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not yet considered diabetes, these recommendations are especially important for you," concluded Prof. Tane the study's findings.
