In the past, formulations for cleaning and whitening teeth were very simple, often involving only one or two ingredients. As modernity progressed, toothpaste evolved to include dozens of components, some of which, unfortunately, are dangerous and toxic.

Why doesn't anyone protest? Primarily because most of us do not understand the nature of toxins and their effects on our bodies, and also because it's very difficult to track the toxin levels in the toothpastes available in today's market.

For instance, Tibetans are still known for having naturally white and healthy teeth. This may be because their diet is closer to nature and less industrialized, but mainly because they clean their teeth with just one ingredient: sea salt and water.

Dr. Gil Yosef Shahar, head of the Rambam Medicine Center, explains that "The fewer ingredients there are in toothpaste, the lower the risk of it containing problematic substances. For example, my toothpaste is very simple, and I make it with just baking soda and water."

Baking soda (or sodium bicarbonate, as it is chemically known) neutralizes acidity, and therefore has several benefits in cleaning teeth and maintaining their health:

1. High acidity damages the enamel layer that coats the tooth, but brushing with baking soda completely neutralizes this acidity and protects this important layer.

2. Studies have shown that baking soda has a phenomenal ability to remove stains from the enamel layer much more effectively than most commercial toothpastes.

3. Baking soda has an amazing whitening capability. A study comparing commercial toothpastes found that the more baking soda they contained, the better their whitening effect.

4. A study conducted in 2008 examined the ability of toothpastes to remove plaque (the layer of bacteria) from our teeth and found that toothpastes with higher concentrations of baking soda removed plaque quickly and efficiently compared to those with lower concentrations.

So how do you prepare natural and healthy toothpaste?

Two methods, with two different ingredients:

The first method (Dr. Gil Yosef Shahar's): In a small glass container, mix a flat teaspoon of baking soda powder with two teaspoons of water, until a watery solution forms (not a paste, as daily brushing with thick granules not diluted in water could cause gum recession).

The second method (of the Tibetan monks): Fill a glass with half cold water and half boiling water, and add a tablespoon of coarse salt. Stir the mixture until foam forms (about one minute of stirring) and brush your teeth with the created foam.
