If you frequently catch the flu during winter, we recommend trying this natural infusion made of three plants known for their health benefits, especially in boosting the immune system.
Before we share the recipe for this wonderful infusion, which helps prevent flu and alleviate its symptoms (sore throat, cough, nasal congestion, and more), we'll briefly outline the benefits of each plant and why they are so effective for you in winter.
Thyme (in Hebrew: "Koranit")
Thyme has long been known as a home remedy beneficial for treating the respiratory and immune systems. A chemical compound found in it, called salicylate, has effects similar to pain relievers in the aspirin family. Additionally, the plant is excellent at calming the digestive system.
Oregano – Not Just a Pizza Seasoning
Oregano leaves contain powerful antibacterial compounds, thanks to the oil containing compounds known as thymol and carvacrol, which are excellent at disinfecting bacteria, relieving sore throats, and clearing accumulated phlegm.
The oil in oregano contains particularly potent antioxidants (40 times more than those in an apple, and 12 times more than those in an orange) that help the body fight off all unwanted 'intruders' and eliminate them completely. Various experts even incorporate oregano into cancer treatment.
Zaatar
Although most of us know it as a spice, zaatar is a plant acclaimed by the 'Agricultural Research Center at the Volcani Institute' as the best and most effective Israeli plant for treating chronic diseases, far more effective than antibiotics.
In research conducted by the center, where the plant's abilities to combat bacteria and fungi were examined, it was found to eliminate them much more efficiently and quickly than antibiotics, while also purifying the respiratory system and alleviating symptoms of asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, phlegm, and various 'winter' illnesses.
To prepare the three-plant infusion, you will need:
- Four fresh stems of oregano
- Two fresh stems of thyme
- Two fresh stems of zaatar
- A medium jug of mineral water
How to prepare the infusion:
1. Thoroughly wash all types of stems and bring them to a boil in a small pot with water.
2. Cook the stems on low heat until the water turns green-yellow.
3. Turn off the heat, and strain the water through a silk sieve to purify it from insects.
4. Cool the water and drink as needed (you can add a flat teaspoon of honey if the taste is too bitter for you).
