Stop Sign: How to Know When Your Body Needs Water, Immediately

Dizziness, migraines, fatigue, and more. Just before winter sets in, and before taking that first 'bite' to satisfy 'hunger,' read these warning signs that show your body is craving more water.

Just before bidding farewell to summer and welcoming winter, it's important to know: in winter, our skin tends to be dryer, and the 'thirst' indicator for water is not what it is during the hot summer days. Some people have trained themselves to consume the same amount of water in winter as in summer, but what about those who haven't?

Drinking an adequate amount of water not only makes the skin smoother, more radiant, and fresher but also enhances the performance of all our internal systems, including faster metabolism.

However, sometimes our body 'confuses' us, and while we're thirsty for water, it signals to us to eat. The advice in such a situation is to drink a glass of water or a caffeine-free hot beverage, wait a few minutes, and then see if we're still hungry. The reason: if we consume food when our body is thirsty and signaling us to drink, we risk mild to moderate dehydration.

But in His abundant mercy, Hashem has created preliminary signs that allow us to recognize the need to drink water just before dehydration occurs.

These are the signs:

 1. Dizziness – When we feel dizzy, it may be because our blood pressure has dropped due to a lack of water (which constitutes the majority of the blood).

 2. Migraines – Headaches and migraines are often caused by a lack of water, especially when the body is on the verge of dehydration. The equation is simple: when blood pressure drops, the heart cannot provide the sufficient level of oxygen needed for the brain's normal functioning, resulting in headaches.

 3. Color of urine – An insufficient amount of water in the body is reflected in the color of urine. Light yellow indicates sufficient drinking. Dark yellow indicates a lack of water, and you need to replenish your 'reserves'.

 4. Forgetfulness and other 'cognitive failures' – Since the brain is composed of 90% water, when it doesn't receive enough, it starts to 'react' negatively: losing concentration and memory, causing us to be overly slow, and even deliberately 'tripping' us up in the simplest and easiest tasks.

 5. Dry skin – Often indicates a lack of sufficient water in the body. Water maintains skin elasticity and helps it look healthy and vital.

 6. Fatigue and heaviness – Chronic fatigue and a sense of drowsiness and heaviness can often be caused by a lack of water.

 7. Constipation – Since water greatly aids the normal functioning of the digestive system and even rapid metabolism, if you suffer from constipation, the first thing you should do is introduce an adequate amount of water or other fluids (but caffeine-free and free of other unhealthy elements).
