Many studies examining the health benefits of citrus fruits have found that their virtues are mainly due to their richness in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as dietary fibers and other substances essential for the proper functioning of our bodies.

Regular consumption of citrus fruits, as revealed by research data, also contributes to reducing the risk of heart attacks, cancer, strokes, birth defects, and more. So what makes citrus fruits so essential to our bodies? Here are 10 facts to help you understand the importance of their daily consumption:

1. Citrus fruits contain significant amounts of vitamin C, which offers numerous health benefits: strengthening dental health, resistance to infections, strengthening heart walls and arteries, prevention of internal ulcers, aiding iron absorption, boosting the immune system and improving its performance, and helping fend off diseases like the flu.

2. Folic acid is also found in citrus fruits and aids in significant functions such as maintaining blood volume and regulating homocysteine levels in the blood (a high level of this hormone poses a risk for those suffering from cardiovascular diseases).

3. Citrus fruits, especially oranges, contain high levels of calcium, essential for building and strengthening tooth enamel.

4. Natural juices from citrus fruits are high in dietary fibers such as cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and pectin. Pectin is well-known for its importance in regulating and absorbing cholesterol and bile from the digestive system into the blood.

5. Flavonoids are antioxidant compounds found at fairly high levels in citrus fruits, especially in the peel and juice. Flavonoids reduce the risk of strokes, heart diseases, and various infections, strengthen the circulatory system, and even prevent internal bleeding like gum bleeding.

6. The pectin found in citrus peels is known to help eliminate metals and other toxins that accumulate in the body. The inner white peel of citrus (known as albedo) contains soluble fibers that lower sugar and bad cholesterol levels and assist in weight loss when accompanied by proper nutrition.

7. Carotenoids are molecules responsible for the orange-red colors in citrus fruits. These fruits have a high level of vitamin A, which functions not only as a vitamin but also as an antioxidant. Consuming red grapefruit juice also provides high amounts of lycopene and beta-carotene.

8. Daily consumption of a citrus fruit or drinking natural juice from citrus fruits during the flu or another feverish illness helps lower body temperature.

9. A direct connection has been found between regular consumption of citrus fruits and oral health. Furthermore, the acidity of citrus fruits stimulates mouth glands to release fluids that cleanse the teeth not only of food remnants but also of accumulated bacteria.

10. Vitamin A provided by orange citrus fruits significantly improves vision, delays skin aging, improves blood circulation, enhances metabolism, is excellent for the lungs, and significantly alleviates sore throats and coughs.

Note: The recommended consumption for pregnant women is two servings of citrus fruit per day. Drinking fresh citrus juice helps pregnant women control their body weight, moderating the typical weight gain during this period.
