After their long winter slumber, female mosquitoes wake up particularly 'hungry' and look for the ideal place that combines warmth and moisture (that is, your body) to aid in their reproduction. Human blood serves as a catalyst for female mosquitoes to produce eggs, which they will lay when water has stood for a long time.

Why are the bites so painful and itchy for us? It's quite simple.

During the bite, the female mosquito secretes various substances from her body into ours, which stimulate our immune system, causing swelling, tingling, itching, and the like - reactions that both adults and children find difficult to cope with.

And what can be done 'after the fact'? Here are eight especially useful tips for real-time relief:

1. Apply 100 percent aloe vera gel or aloe vera gel with drops of tea tree (available at any pharmacy or health food store) on the bite.

2. Take a cloth, put some ice cubes in it, or alternatively, wet it with cold water, and bandage the bite site.

3. Apply tea tree essential oil to the bite (it is advisable to consult a doctor or pharmacist about usage and dosage).

4. Into a small bowl of water, pour four tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and apply to the bite using cotton wool.

5. Ask at the pharmacy for creams and formulations containing a minuscule amount of antihistamine.

6. Lemon juice is an especially effective remedy against bites, though slightly stinging.

7. Apply a small amount of toothpaste on the bite and rinse with water after an hour.

8. Honey and propolis are remedies that significantly soothe the bite area and help especially when it comes to young children (of course, as long as there is no sensitivity to the product, and in any case - it's good to consult a naturopath before using any of the mentioned substances).

Wishing you a healthy, happy, and bite-free summer.
