New Research Finds: Got a Cough? Eat Chocolate

Chocolate is more effective in treating coughs than syrup, due to the alkaloid found in cocoa

Professor Alyn Morice, head of the Department of Cardiac, Vascular and Respiratory Studies at the University of Hull in England, says that chocolate is better for preventing coughs and throat irritation than medications intended for that purpose.

Professor Morice notes that the research is based on a new cough medicine containing cocoa. Patients who took the new medicine reported significant improvement in their cough within two days, compared to patients who took cough syrup containing codeine.

Another study, conducted at Imperial College, one of the world's top academies, explains that cocoa contains an alkaloid - an organic compound that is better at preventing cough irritation than codeine, an ingredient found in cough medicines.

Professor Morice explains that the texture of chocolate is stickier than cough medicines, allowing it to "coat" the throat and protect nerve endings that cause irritation and coughing.

It should be noted that there are still no final conclusions to the research, as further studies are needed on the subject, but chocolate lovers can take comfort in this conclusion and continue eating chocolate...
