The Attid Association – the Dietitians Association of Israel published today (Wednesday) the first-of-its-kind position paper regarding gastric bypass (bariatric) surgeries.

According to the recommendations of the Attid Association, candidates for gastric bypass surgery should adhere to a low-carb diet three weeks prior to surgery. After the surgery, they should gradually return to a normal diet: starting with clear liquids, progressing to soft textures, and then to a variety of foods.

Additionally, during the first year after the surgery, patients should undergo blood tests every three months.

To maintain weight, patients are encouraged to visit a dietitian at least six times during the first year for follow-up and consume 4-6 small meals throughout the day.

Exercise is recommended: "The day after the surgery, it is advised to start with walks and gradually increase aerobic activities like swimming and cycling. About a month and a half after the surgery, weight training can also be incorporated. Gradually, the goal is to reach up to 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of intense aerobic activity."

Regarding carbonated beverages, it is advisable to avoid them post-surgery, separate eating and drinking during meals, and ensure to drink 15 minutes before a meal or half an hour after.

It is also recommended to reduce the intake of liquid and crunchy foods with high-calorie density like milkshakes, cream ice creams, snacks, cakes, and cookies. Smokers are recommended to quit smoking six weeks before the surgery.

Weight loss after surgery primarily occurs in the first year to year and a half post-surgery. The definition of weight loss after bariatric surgery is based on the reduction of existing excess weight. After a sleeve gastrectomy, the average weight loss in the first year to year and a half post-surgery is 60-70% of the excess weight. In addition to weight loss after the surgery, improvements in associated conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver, and sleep apnea are expected.

The Attid Association emphasizes that nutritional therapy for patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery is of great importance to achieve and maintain the surgical goals.
