Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day is observed today (Thursday) in Israel, in memory of the six million Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust.
At 10:00 AM, a siren will sound for a moment of silence, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising monument, attended by the President of the State, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the Knesset, the President of the Supreme Court, and representatives of survivor and fighter organizations.
At 11:00 AM, there will be a public reading of the names of Holocaust victims at the Hall of Remembrance at Yad Vashem, simultaneously with a ceremony at the Knesset sponsored by the Speaker of the Knesset.
What should one do during the siren? Rabbi Zamir Cohen explains:
The central memorial ceremony at the Yad Vashem Hall of Remembrance will begin at 1:00 PM.
At 2:30 PM, the 'March of the Living' will commence at Auschwitz-Birkenau, conducted in a relatively limited format with the participation of eight Holocaust survivors.
Approximately 2,500 people from 25 countries, including refugees from Ukraine, will join them. This year's march symbolizes the passing of the torch of memory from the survivor generation to their grandchildren.
The ceremony is being held after two years of virtual observance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
At 8:00 PM, the closing ceremony for Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day will be held at the Ghetto Fighters' House.
According to data from the Holocaust Survivors Rights Authority in the Ministry of Social Equality, there are currently 161,400 Holocaust survivors and victims of antisemitic persecution in Israel.
The average age of Holocaust survivors and victims of antisemitic persecution is 85.5. Approximately 31,500 survivors are over the age of 90, and more than 1,000 are over 100.
As of today, there are 161,400 Holocaust survivors living in Israel, with an average age of 85.5. In the past year, 15,553 survivors passed away, averaging more than 42 per day.
It is also noted that the Jewish population has not yet returned to its pre-Holocaust numbers. According to data, on the eve of World War II in 1939, there were about 16,600,000 Jews worldwide. By the establishment of the state in 1948, the number had decreased to 11,500,000. Today, there are approximately 15,000,000 Jews in the world.
