Amazing Discovery: You Won't Believe What Was Written in the Mysterious Amulet

I, David ben Shmuel HaLevi, labored over Tosafot on Chullin 96, and thanks to this I ask for the healing of the sick and for the barren to be remembered. The sacred words written by the Taz in an amulet that facilitated healing and childbirth offers us a renewed understanding of the great power of Torah study.

"Every child who studies Torah, every yeshiva student, every scholar, must feel they are on a mission. When a person knows they are an emissary, it gives them strength and motivation to fulfill their mission," says Rabbi Aharon Mordechai Green, rabbi from Beit Shemesh and author of "Collection of Halachic Issues Relevant to Practical Matters."

"The children, and especially the yeshiva students, need to know that toil in Torah is not meant only for the few. We all need to labor and toil; no one is exempt from it, and it is a mission placed on the shoulders of each individual personally.

"If you study, you will bring a bounty of deliverance to the world: healings, success for your parents, for yourself, for other Jews. Studying Torah is the fundament of your being, and when done with toil, it is even more significant.

Rabbi Green continues and tells that Rabbi David HaLevi Segal, author of Turei Zahav (the Taz), wrote an amulet that survived for hundreds of years. The amulet was kept with reverence and used for healing the sick, aiding the barren, and bringing deliverance. Everyone who used this amulet witnessed salvation.

"There was a tradition that the Taz warned not to open the amulet, and if it would be opened—it would cease to bring deliverance," says Rabbi Green, adding that 80 years ago, there was a person who was very curious about what was written in the amulet or was unaware of the severe warning. He opened the amulet and was astonished to read its words: "I, David ben Shmuel HaLevi, labored over the Tosafot on Chullin 96, and thanks to this I ask for the healing of the sick and for the barren to be remembered."

"For hundreds of years, the sick were healed and the barren remembered thanks to the toil and effort of the Taz in a singular Tosafot throughout the Talmud," exclaims Rabbi Green with enthusiasm. "This shows us how important and mighty the effort in studying Torah is.

"When a young man goes to yeshiva, he needs to know this. He needs to know that his parents understand that it is hard for him and that he is making an effort, and they are proud of him for that. They rejoice in his fortune and are delighted that their son toils and labors in Torah. He has a mission; he gives pleasure to his parents—two strong engines that give him a very strong boost to succeed in his studies.

"Another point worth emphasizing among the youth is that the primary toil in Torah is during the youthful years. As one grows a little older, one begins to enjoy the learning. Even if there is toil and effort, it comes from joy, from desire and willingness to study Torah. But during the younger years, when the enjoyment isn't yet felt—that is the main period for effort in the sacred Torah, and it would be a pity to miss this stage, and the toil and effort we want and need to invest in Torah," concludes Rabbi Green.

Rabbi David HaLevi Segal (the Taz) passed away 354 years ago (5646 – 26 Shevat 5427). He was the rabbi of important communities in Poland, one of the commentators of the Shulchan Aruch, and one of the great Ashkenazi poskim during the Chmielnicki massacres. Known by his work the Turei Zahav.
