How Can Our Thoughts Change Our Reality?

We must pay attention to our thoughts and strive to change them for the better.

The results arrived. She can't breathe, feeling like she might faint any second. Just as she thought, the answer is positive.

For years, she's been doing tests for cancer detection. Since her sister passed away, she has had a strong feeling that she’ll get it too, because cancer is hereditary. Surely everyone is whispering behind her back, here’s another one from their family with cancer, it’s hereditary with them, even their grandfather had it, don't marry into them…

Studies show that genetic cancer occurs in only 5% of cases, and is considered such only if several family members had it, and only if all were under the age of 50.

This means that for most patients, it is not genetic. There may be one sick person in the family, and immediately everyone imagines they will be sick too, and then the thought manifests itself, and indeed more people in that family become ill.

"One must guard thought greatly, for thought can become a vital force" (Rabbi Nachman of Breslov).

Thought has tremendous power, to the extent that it can create our reality! Thought precedes speech and action, and everything comes from thought. It is therefor of utmost importance that we pay attention to our thoughts, especially the negative ones about ourselves and our lives, and make every effort to change them.

A relative of mine had a heart attack. Luckily, his wife caught the early signs, and he was saved. His friend, out of stress from the story, decided to get checked, and to his and the doctors' surprise, he was also on the verge of a heart attack!

Can we control thought?

Rabbi Nachman of Breslov says: "It is a rule that it is impossible to have two thoughts at the same time, so it is easy to dismiss bad thoughts…just think of something else, like Torah, business matters, gratitude or Hashem and His love for us" (Siman N').

When a thought continually pursues us, it's time to change it. In NLP there are many ways to do this. I invite you to take a paper and pen and write down the negative thought that holds you back or scares you. Start by asking yourself questions about it:

  1. Is it certainly true? Who said so? – Start to question it.
  2. What will happen if this thought won't exist? How will your life change without it? What will you lose when this thought is no longer present in your life?
  3. What thought would you like to put in its place? What is a thought that will help you progress?
  4. Which people/characters can help you believe in this new thought? Find 3 such mentors.
  5. Put yourself in the shoes of each character and write how they are strengthening you in this new thought. Write down everything the character says to you.
  6. What is the central message you discern from all the characters together? Write it in big next to your bed, and say it to yourself 14 times a day for 21 days.

Are thoughts stronger than you? Are they holding you back from progressing?

You are welcome to engage in a process to change them from the root and move towards the place you dream of.
