#VALUE!
Some people tend to think that emotions and feelings are outside of their control- as if we’re simply at the mercy of our moods. In reality, it’s possible to reshape the brain and strengthen positive emotional patterns, while reducing and even weakening the brain activity behind negative ones.
Every action, word, or thought triggers neural activity- movements of brain cells, or neurons. When a specific action, word, or thought is repeated, it creates a stable neural path, a recognizable pattern of brain activity. Over time, these repeated patterns form what scientists call a neural network.
Neural connections that are used more frequently grow stronger. The repetition of a thought, behavior, or expression leads to stronger synapses (connections between neurons), increases the number of active brain cells involved, and solidifies the habit- whether mental, verbal, or physical. The more the network is activated, the more entrenched the habit becomes neurologically, and therefore, the harder it is to break.
This applies to any skill including math, playing an instrument, memorization etc. The more you repeat it, the more those specific brain regions strengthen their internal communication.
What is a thought? It is a neural pathway- literally a physical route in your brain- that gets built and reinforced through repetition. The more you revisit a thought, the stronger the links between the neurons involved in it become. Think of it like a hiking trail- the more people walk it, the more defined it becomes.
Recurring thoughts or habits physically shape the structure of your brain. Every thought or belief that surfaces in your awareness strengthens the pathway it travels on, and eventually, those thoughts begin to appear automatically, without conscious effort. For this reason, when you intentionally choose a positive mindset or adopt new, healthy habits, even if they feel forced or awkward at first, they gradually become second nature. The more you repeat them, the stronger those neural connections become.
On the other hand, the brain naturally begins to break down unused neural connections. When certain areas of the brain go unused, they begin to atrophy, and the connections between them and other areas weaken. If you interrupt a negative thought and stop yourself from reacting emotionally as you once did, the long-term connections in that thought pattern begin to dissolve. In simple terms, the more you push out a negative thought, the weaker it becomes over time.
Consistent repetition can reprogram your brain. Affirmations, positive self-talk, and adopting a constructive perspective on yourself and life can literally change your brain. Repeating positive phrases or internal messages strengthens the neural network behind those beliefs until, eventually, they become part of your automatic, subconscious thinking.
When you intentionally build a new belief system that empowers and affirms your value, it shapes the way you see yourself, the world, and your future. It fuels motivation, sparks positive change, and nurtures a healthier relationship with yourself.
The Brain Gym: Mental Training that Works
Training your mind is like training a muscle. It takes practice and discipline, but the results come gradually, and they’re real. The brain responds to consistent repetition, and with time, it can be rewired to think in new ways.
In fact, what we focus on is what we become. From a neurological standpoint, repeated focus creates identity. We have the power to shape ourselves, one thought at a time.

Pay attention to how often you express negativity including complaints, frustration, disappointment, anger, bitterness, or resentment. You might be surprised by how often it happens. As soon as you notice a negative comment- whether out loud or in your mind- pause and reframe it. Look for something positive in the same situation and say it out loud or write it down. Add another positive thought for balance. This simple practice will help shift your mindset from criticism to constructive thinking.
Changing your thought patterns may take time, but with awareness, practice, and consistency, it is possible. The more you repeat positive thinking and behaviors, the more you train your brain to work for you, not against you. That is the beginning of lasting transformation.
