#VALUE!
One of the most essential spiritual efforts for anyone seeking to shape and build their character is to develop a deep inner recognition of their own worth, balanced by genuine humility. Without an awareness of their immense value as the pinnacle of creation, and the profound impact of every positive or negative action they take in the spiritual realm (and by extension, in the physical world), a person may fall into a state of despair or purposelessness without even realizing it. This can lead to a lack of motivation to pursue positive actions, driven by a false sense of inadequacy or inner discouragement- described by the verse, “Man bows low, and people are brought down.”
At the same time, one must be cautious not to let self-worth spiral into the pursuit of honor or recognition. As ancient wisdom teaches, “Envy, desire, and the pursuit of honor remove a person from the world.” True spiritual greatness includes “distancing oneself from honor,” one of the forty-eight qualities through which Torah wisdom is acquired. The ideal path is to live with humility, paired with a healthy appreciation for one’s inherent worth.
The sages pose a powerful question: Why was the first human, Adam, created alone, unlike the plants, animals, and other creatures that were created in groups? Their answer holds deep lessons about the individual’s value: Adam was created alone to teach that “anyone who destroys a single life is considered as if they have destroyed an entire world, and anyone who saves a single life is considered as if they have saved an entire world.” This is because every person descends from a single individual, and thus, each life contains the potential of an entire world.
This also teaches that no individual can claim superiority based on lineage, as we all share one ancestor. It also refutes the belief in multiple divine authorities and highlights the Creator’s greatness: A king might stamp many coins with the same image, but every person created by G-d is uniquely different, despite being created from the same source. Therefore, every individual should be able to say, “The world was created for me.”
A similar idea is expressed in another traditional source: each person must say, “For my sake the world was created, and the Torah was given to me.”
No person should think of themselves as just another face in the crowd- each person’s presence in the world is irreplaceable. In the specific time and place they live, with their unique background and capabilities, they have a distinct role to play that no other person can fulfill.
Your Personal Mission
Each person is a vital part of a complex system that functions through mutual interaction- every individual is essential to the completeness of the world. Through our choices, we can contribute to or harm the system. Kabbalistic teachings explain that each person has two spiritual missions: the first is a universal contribution to the repair of the world, achieved through the observance of commandments and the second is their unique personal mission.
A person can identify their core mission by paying attention to two elements: the commandment they feel most drawn to, and the struggle they face with a particular negative behavior. The commandment they are most passionate about often reflects the primary spiritual deficiency their soul was sent to heal, and the transgression they struggle with the most often points to the most critical challenge their soul must overcome. These insights provide a spiritual map for personal growth and purpose.
This also explains why every person is created with a unique appearance and personality- to remind us that each of us has a distinct mission that no one else can fulfill. It doesn’t matter whether someone is healthy or sick, conventionally attractive or not, physically perfect or disabled, mentally stable or challenged. Every good deed or hardship they endure contributes to their personal refinement and helps elevate the entire world.
