Many people ask: How can I love myself when I have so many shortcomings? Isn’t self-love just another form of arrogance? How can I grow and improve without constantly criticizing myself?

It’s a valid question.

Honest self-examination is essential to recognize and work through our weaknesses. But excessive shame or low self-esteem, leads to emotional paralysis, anxiety, and inevitably, hostility toward others. When we are deeply ashamed of ourselves, we tend to project that shame onto others, blaming and belittling them as a way to ease our inner discomfort.

We should feel responsible for our actions, but not ashamed of who we are at our core. We are not to blame for things beyond our control including our current abilities, our level of emotional maturity, or even where others are in their own journey. Excessive shame creates a deep sense of unworthiness, distancing us from others and blocking our ability to love and be loved.

The Power of Loving Yourself

In Ahavat Meisharim (a book of Jewish ethics), the author reflects on the verse in Leviticus 19:17, emphasizing that only someone who feels good about themselves is truly capable of fulfilling the commandment, "Love your neighbor as yourself."

Chovot HaLevavot (Duties of the Heart) also reminds us not to shame a child who is old enough to feel embarrassed. Just as G-d continues to love us despite our flaws, so too we must love ourselves and others, even when we’re far from perfect.

There will be times when our mood is low, when we feel angry, selfish, or depressed. We may find ourselves being forgetful, impatient, disorganized, or even unkind. We might see the same flaws in our children or our spouse. But when this happens, we must act like a good healer- prescribe spiritual practices, reflection, or self-care that help us get back on track.

We don’t need to stop loving ourselves, or anyone else, simply because we stumbled.

What We Need Most: Unconditional Love

During such times, what we need most is not harshness or shame, but unconditional love that accepts our limits while still encouraging us to grow. In an atmosphere like that, true personal development thrives.

Maintaining self-respect and respect for others isn’t about self-deception or complacency, but about being calm and objective enough to guide ourselves toward the best next steps in our ongoing mission of personal growth.

Growth Is Natural- Unless It’s Blocked

We should keep in mind that the divine spark within every person naturally drives us toward growth, unless it’s paralyzed by too much shame, guilt, or fear. If we cultivate a positive and compassionate attitude toward ourselves, that natural drive will guide us forward.

Loving yourself isn’t arrogance, but is the foundation for all healthy growth. When we stop shaming ourselves, we give ourselves permission to become who we were truly meant to be.
