Scientific advancements have created artificial lights (electric light, computers, screens, etc.) that can interfere with our biological system and cause us to remain alert at night and function less effectively during the day. The recommended sleep time is 7-8 hours, as our Sages said.
It is interesting to note that in the morning blessings, we say a similar blessing about the biological mechanism that the Creator instilled in animals such as the rooster. It is the first blessing on the wonders of creation, and the distinction between day and night: "Who gives the rooster understanding to distinguish between day and night"!
