A dramatic event that occurred in the early hours of Shabbat in the Ate district of Lima, Peru's capital, shocked the nation and was even captured by local train station security cameras.
The footage shows a drunk man, later identified as Juan Carlos Tejo, who fell asleep on the track in a state of exhaustion. Little did he know that just minutes later, a freight train would arrive. The video shows the freight train moving slowly on the tracks and hitting Tejo, although he managed to wake up at the last moment and even stood on his feet.
Bystanders watching the accident in horror were convinced that Tejo was dead after the train dragged him a short distance, where he was 'thrown' beyond the tracks.
However, before their astonished eyes, what appeared to be a real miracle occurred: Tejo stood up under his own power and only sustained a minor injury to his left hand. Rescue forces quickly arrived at the scene, and he was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. A police officer at the 'Ate' station, General Javier Avalos, who updated the local media about the incident, called it "unbelievable survival." He also attributed the miracle to the slow speed at which the train was traveling and the elevated structure of the tracks. Neighborhood residents, accustomed to the noise of trains, do not always notice unusual events, but this time many witnessed the shocking footage and were left shaken.
Following the incident, local authorities and the Lima municipality called for increased enforcement around railway areas and raised awareness of the dangers near trains, especially during nighttime. Peru's Department of Transportation is soon planning to install gates or fencing in vulnerable areas like this train station, as just this past August, a person was killed while walking along the tracks wearing headphones. The event also raised questions about the safety regulations of freight trains on the outskirts of Lima—a city known for its urban pace but facing severe infrastructure challenges.
