When Georg Winterling cut his finger while inflating an old mattress, he didn't think much of it. But what seemed like a minor injury quickly escalated to a deadly sepsis, endangering his life and forcing doctors to make a difficult decision: amputation of all four limbs to save him.

According to an article recently published on the Walla site and the German network DW, Georg, aged 40, injured himself while inflating an old mattress in his basement. A small cut on the index finger – nothing that appeared serious. Initially, like many would, he ignored the injury. After some time, a blister appeared, but this didn't concern him greatly either. He decided to get checked anyway, but two doctors who examined him sent him home.

Within just a few days, the "minor" cut developed into a life-threatening infection. Georg began experiencing breathing difficulties and was taken to the hospital, where it became evident that the infection had spread throughout his body, leading to sepsis – a severe medical condition where the immune system reacts extremely to an infection, damaging essential organs.

Georg's situation was further complicated because the bacteria that entered his body came from mouse droppings on the mattress. The infection led to septic shock, where blood pressure drops drastically, affecting oxygen supply to vital organs like the lungs and kidneys.

When doctors realized Georg's life was in danger, they placed him under sedation, concentrating oxygen to his vital organs to save them. As a result, his arms and legs were left without sufficient oxygen supply, leading to severe necrosis. At this stage, the doctors had to amputate all four limbs to save his life.

Georg, who became disabled due to the incident, shares the pain of his experience:"I wasn't fully aware of what sepsis is and where it can lead. Only recently did I learn how dangerous it is. In most cases, it ends in death because it isn't recognized in time. In some sense, I was lucky to still be here despite what I lost."
