If we told you that ketchup, the beloved condiment found in nearly every pantry, can also be used to clean stubborn stains from pots, would you believe it?

In large kitchens across the U.S., it's not uncommon to keep bottles of ketchup specifically for this purpose. Local chefs reveal the surprising secret behind it: "The acidity of ketchup is an effective tool for cleaning tough food stains and scorch marks on cookware."

Why is it good for cleaning?

Ketchup contains acetic acid, which comes from vinegar, along with other ingredients like tomatoes and sugar. This acidity can break down grease and soften tough grime on metal surfaces like pots and pans. "It's a trick chefs use in busy kitchens," says Chef Ricardo Mendes, owner of a restaurant in Lisbon. "When a pot gets a tough stain during cooking, ketchup is the first solution I try."

So how do you use ketchup for cleaning?

  1. Spread a thin layer of ketchup on the dirty or scorched area of the cookware.
  2. Let it sit for about 15 minutes.
  3. Then, gently scrub with a wet sponge.
  4. Wash the item with hot water and dish soap as usual.

Why specifically ketchup?

Besides its effectiveness in cleaning, it's an inexpensive and readily available product in nearly every home. It is also safe to use, unlike strong chemical cleaners.

After the treatment, cookware will look shiny and clean without the need for intensive scrubbing or special products. It's worth trying this method the next time you encounter a stubborn stain.
