A rare coin with a unique printing error, hidden by an Ohio family for nearly forty years, recently sold for over $500,000 at auction.

This coin was minted in 1975 and features President Franklin D. Roosevelt, but unlike other coins minted in San Francisco, it lacks the "S" mark indicating its origin in that city.

Coins with such an error are extremely rare.

Only one other coin with the same error was discovered earlier and was sold in 2019 for $456,000.

The two rare coins are part of a special edition of 2.8 million coins issued in 1975, which were part of sets containing six coins.

For perspective - at the time of issuance, they were sold for $7, equivalent to $40 today. So, who is behind the coin’s sale? Three sisters from Ohio who chose to remain anonymous. According to them, they inherited the coin from their late brother who kept it as a "security fund." The coin was originally purchased by the family in 1978 for $18,200 - a sum worth $90,000 today.

The auction, conducted by the ‘Great Collections’ auction house in California by President Ian Russell, concluded last Sunday with the sale of the rare coin for a final amount of $506,250.
