This centipede has been researched for seven years and has not been recorded since 1967 until recently.

The centipede in the video is not just 'another' centipede.

It is one of only eight centipedes unique for glowing in the dark like fireflies, allowing them to blend better into their surroundings.

The fascinating phenomenon is scientifically known as 'bioluminescence'—or, more loosely translated, biological illumination—the ability of animals and natural creatures to emit light from their bodies through a chemical reaction occurring internally.

According to Dr. Paul Marek, an entomologist at the College of Life Sciences in the USA, this is a rare species of centipede not seen for 50 years.

The rare species of centipede, Xystocheir bistipita, last seen in 1967, was recently rediscovered during a field study by Dr. Paul Marek in the California mountains.

This centipede emits a faint light and is usually found in warm areas at the base of mountains. An extensive genetic study conducted by Marek showed that this species is a relative of another luminous centipede, Motyxia, which lives in cooler mountainous regions. Following the discovery, Marek chose to rename the rare species scientifically to Motyxia bistipita.
