A new study published in Spain has caused a sensation worldwide: Christopher Columbus, the 15th-century explorer, was of Spanish-Jewish descent who emigrated from Western Europe. The researchers leading the study used DNA analysis to reach this conclusion, following tests performed on remains attributed to Columbus, which are located in the cathedral in Seville.

For many years, debates have existed regarding Columbus's origin, with claims that he was from Genoa in Italy, alongside alternative theories linking him to Greeks, Portuguese, or British. Now, the Spanish scientists present genetic evidence indicating Jewish heritage. "We have partial DNA, but it is enough to determine Columbus had Jewish ancestry," they stated.

The research was conducted over 22 years, during which samples from Columbus's remains were compared to samples from his known relatives and descendants. The findings were published in a documentary broadcasted on Spanish television, generating significant interest in the scientific and historical community.

Historians note that during Columbus's time, around 300,000 Jews lived in Spain, and according to the study, he was likely part of that community, which suffered from persecution and expulsion.
