Four Sources for Plant-Based Food Supply in the Shemitah Year:
A. Shemitah Stores - Shemitah stores are fruit and vegetable supply stations operating under the supervision of the Shemitah Committee.
B.The Shemitah Committee - The Shemitah Committee is a public body that has taken upon itself, both halachically and practically, to ensure the supply of fruits and vegetables that are:
1. Without concern of "Shamur" (guarded produce) - From fields, orchards, and groves whose owners do not guard their fields, as the Torah commands, "And for your cattle and for the beasts that are in your land shall all its produce be to eat."
2. Without concern of "Ne'evad" (worked produce) - From sources that were not worked during Shemitah with prohibited labor, "It shall be a year of rest for the land."
3.Without concern of "Sefichin" (aftergrowths) - From crops that are not categorized as aftergrowths.
4. Without concern of commerce: The distribution of fruits and vegetables is done where payment covers only the expenses incurred by the farmer and the distribution station owner, without profit on the fruits themselves.
5. Without concern of purchasing from someone suspected of violating Shemitah laws.
6. Without concern of transferring Shemitah money to the unlearned - Since the money received by the vegetable store owner is not in exchange for the fruit, but for ongoing expenses.
