There are many things beyond our control in this world, one of which is the complications that can arise during childbirth, heaven forbid. This is exactly what happened to Melanie Pritchard from the USA during her delivery, despite her pregnancy being without any issues.
Her husband, Doug, who was asked to enter the operating room when things started to go wrong, recalls that everything was fine initially. 'The water started to break, and she complained to me that she was in severe pain. I thought it was natural, but a second later, I saw her eyes rolling back, and her head fell to the side,' he recalls. 'Suddenly, the monitor went crazy, and when I looked at it, I saw a red line with the number 0. That's when I realized she wasn't breathing.'
It soon became clear that Melanie was suffering from an amniotic fluid embolism—a rare allergic reaction where the amniotic fluid enters the bloodstream, causing the heart and lungs to shut down (a condition that sometimes results in death, heaven forbid).
When the doctors realized Melanie was dying, they immediately performed a cesarean section to deliver the baby and called her husband into the operating room to say goodbye. 'When I saw my daughter for the first time, it was the most bittersweet moment of my life,' Doug recalls. 'Suddenly, the realization struck me that Melanie might no longer be here and that I would have to raise this princess alone.'

While dying, the husband leaned to her ear and whispered
Even in those moments, as despair washed over him and hope seemed to slip away forever, Doug didn't give up. He leaned over to his wife and told her, 'If there's any chance you have strength left to fight... then please, fight.'
'Melanie was declared clinically dead, and in the eyes of the doctors, she had no chance of coming out of it. We had been married for only three years, and I found myself sitting next to her, holding her hand and praying. I begged Hashem to bring her back.'
The next 24 hours were long and tough.
But then something amazing happened: Melanie's older brother, a doctor by profession, decided to visit the hospital to check on his sister's condition. Thanks to him, it was discovered that Melanie was suffering from internal bleeding due to the cesarean section, and the doctors had actually missed this fact.
'There was great panic around her, and it was decided to take her back to the operating room—even though she had already been declared dead,' Doug recounts. 'The day after, Melanie woke up, with eyes full of tears. I ran to her, held her hand, and whispered how proud I was of her for her victory.'

'I woke up with an amazing feeling of peace'
But the doctors remained pessimistic. 'We were prepared for the fact that Melanie would need a heart transplant, as her heart was too weak after the shocks it had been through. Many family members and friends were here, and we just sat at the hospital day and night praying for her. I remember looking around and seeing everyone so focused on their prayers, never stopping their tears. We spread her name everywhere possible on social media, and thousands of people we didn’t know joined in prayer.'
'It's a miracle that so many people prayed for her,' says Melanie's brother, Dr. Orazio Ambile.
Just 24 hours after being taken to the operating room, Melanie was able to breathe on her own, and within a week, she was discharged home in excellent condition. 'I woke up with an amazing feeling of peace, and my first memory was asking them 'what happened.' I woke up with a sense of confusion and lack of clarity, but I knew something had happened,' says Melanie.
'The most amazing thing is that Melanie functions normally,' says her brother. 'She has no significant damage resulting from the trauma she went through, no cardiac effects. Both she and the baby, Ella, are completely healthy.'
