Finally: Winter Time 2013

This coming Saturday night, we gain an entire hour: Daylight Saving Time will be replaced by Standard Time. Note: Shabbat ends earlier, sunrise services are earlier.

On the upcoming Saturday night, the clock will be set back one hour, and the time 2:00 AM will become 1:00 AM.

Extending Daylight Saving Time by a full three weeks is expected to save the economy two hundred thousand shekels. Interior Minister Gideon Saar announced in May, after the decision to extend the time, that "there will be a direct impact and a positive expression in the areas of economy, trade, leisure, energy savings, health, and road safety."

From the perspective of the Jewish calendar, this is a significant change: if the candle lighting time this week (Chayei Sarah) occurs at 17:35, then the next Shabbat (Parashat Toldot) will already begin at 16:29. A particularly short Friday is expected, while there will be more time after Shabbat.

Men who leave early for work will be pleased with the clock change. Until now, sunrise was around 6:50, and it was difficult to pray with a quorum without being late for work. Now, sunrise will be an hour earlier, making it easier for those praying.
