#VALUE!
The interpretation of the letter 'Reish' is "head". A head also signifies a beginning. The first word in the Torah is "Bereishit" – with the 'Bet' indicating 'in' the beginning.
The Malbim explains that the word "Reshit" is not synonymous with 'beginning', as a beginning merely means something wasn't present before and now it is. "Reshit" comes from the root for head, which is not just the start, but the root and source of everything to follow—like how a human head isn't only the body's start; it orchestrates the entire body, each function stemming from it.
Along these lines, it’s taught that the "Reshit" of creation refers to the initial formation of the heavens and the earth—all of creation's constituents were formed on that day. However, this was just the raw material stage, without its final perfected shape, forming the essence from which everything else would develop. This idea echoes the Ramban’s stance that creation ex nihilo occurred on the first day.
Hence, the letter 'Reish' embodies the concept of a head, the driving force of continuity. Similar to fundamental matter, the basic quality of which is motion, also perceived as energy, matter cannot exist without it. Like atoms constantly in motion, where atomic parts also revolve, motion is intrinsic, forming the foundational energy of all material shapes.
In the Gemara on Shabbat, 'Reish' associates with the word "Rasha" (wicked). This aligns with the letter's name; a Rasha, though possessing potential, stays undeveloped spiritually, thus deemed empty spiritually (Rash).
The letter 'Reish' pronunciation involves a tremor, a longer 'Reish' sound for emphasizing vibration. This mirrors head as a shapeless, purposeless force, merely self-contained motion.
The proximity of 'Reish' after 'Kuf' signifies the foundational sequence in creation—space's creation was prerequisite for material creation.
The word "Amar" precisely depicts world creation lines. 'Aleph' denotes initial oneness conceived pre-creation, leading into 'Mem', symbolizing division into various concepts. The final act creation ex nihilo, represented by 'Reish', denotes foundational matter encapsulating the world's potential. Giving shape to matter extends beyond creation ex nihilo, into formation, symbolized by 'Shin'.
The word "Reik" parallels "Rash", suggesting a place primed to hold an object now empty. 'Reish' relates here as space forms the basis for any object existence, embodying potentiality yet unrealized.
The term "Rar" and its derivative "Rir" rely solely on 'Reish' meaning as form-less, aimless motion, thus signifying spill-over fluid. The word "Ruach" (wind/spirit) uses 'Reish' for motion without purpose, its core meaning—a term for the abstract, deemed spiritual.
In most words featuring 'Reish', its meaning remains uncompromised, expressing foundational energy and matter capable of taking any shape, reinforcing meanings of other letters. However, when beginning a word, it usually signifies action through energy (as with the tremor).
