One in five people struggles with allergies and their symptoms, yet not everyone can pinpoint the exact cause of their allergic reactions. The culprits could be changing weather patterns, dust sensitivity, tree or shrub blossoms, pet hair, or reactions to insects, feathers, and other triggers.

Dr. Moti Levy, Chief Physician at "Clalit Complementary Medicine," notes that if you seek treatment for allergies from a doctor, you may be prescribed medications or antihistamines aimed at reducing or eliminating allergy symptoms. However, to address the root of the problem and ease allergy symptoms, if not eliminate them completely, there are more natural approaches.

What is an Allergy?

An allergy is the body's response to a substance known as an allergen found in certain foods, plants, medications, pollen, animal hair, and almost everything around us. According to Dr. Levy, the immune system of those who suffer from allergies perceives allergens as dangerous foreign invaders, thus reacting accordingly.

"The body responds vigorously by releasing various substances (including one called histamine) that cause an inflammatory reaction. The result is the appearance of allergy symptoms such as a clear runny nose, frequent sneezing, itchy throat and nose, and even conditions like asthma characterized by shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing," says Levy.

How to Treat Allergies?

There are several steps you can take to reduce allergic reactions:

  • It is recommended to install an air conditioning system with appropriate filters to capture pollen.
  • Avoid proximity to pine, olive, and pecan trees or other plants known to cause sensitivity.
  • Avoid consuming high-sugar foods, milk, chocolate milk, and sweetened dairy products when experiencing unexplained mucus.
  • Stay in enclosed spaces when possible.

Additionally, there are vitamins, minerals, herbal remedies, and other natural substances that can alleviate allergy symptoms. Zinc, Vitamin C, and Quercetin can be taken as dietary supplements or consumed in foods rich in these nutrients. For instance, Vitamin C is abundant in red peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, citrus fruits, strawberries, and kiwi. Zinc can be found in oats, pumpkin seeds, turkey breast, lentils, salmon, and whole wheat.

Moreover, staying well-hydrated can also help alleviate allergy symptoms by aiding the body's detoxification processes, even in cases of congestion. It is recommended to drink between 8 to 10 glasses of water a day, or alternatively, obtain fluids from herbal teas or vegetable juices.
