Vitamin D, often called "the sunshine vitamin," is recognized as one of the key molecules for maintaining human health.
Historically, it has been known for its role in calcium absorption and its necessity for maintaining bone tissue. It plays a crucial role in preventing calcium loss, aiding in intestinal calcium absorption, and reducing calcium excretion in urine.
Recent studies have revealed that vitamin D has many additional roles:
Proper functioning of the thyroid gland – The thyroid won't function correctly without sufficient D levels.
Boosting the immune system – It reduces inflammation and supports proper cell division in the body, effectively preventing malignant diseases, G-d forbid.
Vitamin D is essential for the proper functioning of muscles and ligaments and has other critical health impacts on the body.
Deficiency can lead to problems – mental health issues, fatigue, depression, and an increased risk of obesity.
Unlike other vitamins, which can be obtained through diet, vitamin D can also be synthesized by the body through exposure to the sun's UVB rays.
Surprisingly, despite Israel being a sunny country, many people have a deficiency – low levels of this vitamin. Most people don't get enough sun exposure, work indoors, and even when they do go out in the sun, they use sunscreen. While it’s essential to protect the skin, just fifteen minutes of midday sun can provide the required vitamin levels.
People with darker skin absorb less vitamin D because their skin has a natural sunscreen. They need more sun exposure time to produce the necessary amount.
Another reason for vitamin D deficiency is a diet based on processed foods that have lost their nutritional value and don't contain enough vitamin D.
Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so it tends to accumulate in fat tissues. Therefore, overweight individuals need higher doses than lean individuals to achieve good absorption.
Small doses do not ensure good absorption. It’s essential to perform a test to determine the proper dosage.
Even those who feel that taking supplements isn't natural and vitamins should be sourced solely from food face a challenge with vitamin D due to today's unnatural lifestyle habits.
Vitamin D is found in fatty fish, organ meats, egg yolk, and sunflower seeds.
