Stay Healthy This Winter: Natural Remedies for the Flu
Discover how Echinacea and propolis can help you combat the flu and why they are winter must-haves.

Echinacea, popularly known as "Purple Coneflower," is one of the most popular medicinal herbs worldwide. It's recognized as an effective and well-researched plant for bolstering and supporting the immune system.
For over a century, millions in the United States and Europe have turned to echinacea at the first sign of a cold or flu. It's used to treat respiratory infections, ear infections, and fungal infections, as well as inflammatory skin diseases like boils and acne. Echinacea has strong lymphatic drainage properties and aids in detoxifying and reducing metabolic burdens associated with various illnesses.
Echinacea boosts the immune system, which fights infections by producing antibodies and increasing the number of white blood cells that combat infections.
These white blood cells include lymphocytes that fight viruses, natural killer cells attacking tumors, and macrophages that destroy disease-causing bacteria.
More than 400 studies have been published on echinacea, with some providing especially high-quality control. In one study, 108 patients with severe flu were observed. Half were given echinacea, and the rest a placebo. After eight weeks, results indicated that those treated with echinacea recovered more quickly and remained healthy for longer periods.
A daily dose of echinacea is an excellent preventive measure during the cold and flu season.
Propolis
Another fantastic product that's highly beneficial during this season is propolis.
Propolis is a bee product made by bees and has piqued human interest due to admiration for bee life. In the hive, the temperature reaches 35 degrees Celsius, and humidity 95%, conditions ideal for mold and bacteria. Yet, no infections occur in the hive. Bees apply propolis at the hive's entrances, in cells where the queen lays eggs, on honeycombs, and in all hive crevices.
Propolis contains over 22 different compounds, with flavonoids being the main component providing many properties to strengthen the immune system. This substance has antibacterial activity, especially against bacteria resistant to stomach acidity and salmonella species. It also has antifungal properties. Studies have found that its active polyphenol content reduces cancer development. Propolis also possesses antioxidant properties and offers local anesthetic effects, helping in wound healing.
