One of the best solutions to curb food cravings is to add healthy foods to your menu rather than cutting them out.
Many nutritionists provide their clients with lists of prohibited and recommended foods, which can discourage people from seeking dietary advice. Most of us are wary of giving up our usual menu to start eating foods that are "healthy" but perhaps not so tasty.
By opting for nutrient-dense foods, our desire for unhealthy options will naturally diminish over time.
Eating and drinking healthy foods early in the day is likely to reduce our craving or capacity to indulge in less healthy choices later on.
This method works wonders when we drink more water—fill a jug of water and drink throughout the day. You'll have less desire for coffee, tea, or other beverages. The water will crowd out the unhealthy drinks, thereby enhancing your health.
Just like drinking water, consuming healthy foods will lead us to avoid junk food. Increasing the intake of nutritious foods, like fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, whole grains, and legumes, will naturally curb the consumption of nutrient-poor, processed, and harmful substances.
Once the body receives beneficial, tissue-building, energy-creating foods—foods that nourish rather than requiring the body's systems to work hard to break down and eliminate waste—the body will naturally crave these foods. Taste buds will adapt, and healthy food will become tasty, because taste is an acquired sensation.
Phasing out our favorite yet harmful foods should be done gradually and safely.
The key is to plan your life so the food you need is ready when you need it. Try not to find yourself hungry with no healthy food prepared. Proper planning ahead of time is essential.
This requires thinking, understanding, desire, training, and a lot of s'yata dishmaya (divine assistance).
Understanding the importance of quality life, health of the body and mind, is worth any effort to adopt new habits.
Like any beginning, it's difficult. But as you get used to it, it becomes a lifestyle. The difficulty diminishes and the quality of life rises.
