Toxins that enter our bodies are essentially any substance that disrupts normal bodily functions. When a particular substance lingers in the body for too long, it can cause harm.
Metabolism in the body is a natural process. The body produces toxins and waste that it is equipped to eliminate—waste disposal systems work well with substances the body recognizes and can break down. This natural process occurs only with foods derived from nature.
Sometimes, toxins enter the body that are difficult to break down—substances the body doesn’t recognize, such as preservatives, refined and hydrogenated oils, artificial food colorings, pesticides, and more. These toxins come not only from food but also from cosmetics, food packaging, the air, and the water we drink.
The body can prevent disease when it successfully breaks down and removes accumulated waste through the digestive system, liver, skin, urine, and lymphatic system. The body has mechanisms to neutralize and eliminate toxins. Problems arise when the detox and cleansing rate fails to keep up with the influx of new toxins.
When the body struggles to cleanse itself, it stores the toxins in fatty tissues. Over time, this may lead to headaches, fatigue, rashes, arthritis, concentration difficulties, and other chronic illnesses.
Every Illness Is a Toxin Build-up
To start detoxing, preparation is key. Without proper preparation, we risk causing harm.
If toxins are released from the tissues into the bloodstream too quickly, the liver cannot cope with the load. Therefore, detox should be approached gradually. Without the right preparation, we might cause more harm than good.
The best time to detox is in the spring, starting at the beginning of the month of Adar. The focus is on reducing the intake of new toxins. It's essential to avoid processed foods, alcohol, caffeine, and animal products.
Begin by reducing calorie intake and ensuring that the foods consumed have fewer toxins. The cleanse relies on plant-based foods—leafy greens, sprouts, and a wide variety of vegetables.
While an occasional thorough cleanse is beneficial, daily detoxing is even more crucial. Thus, avoid eating three hours before bed, ideally from nightfall onwards. Eating late causes the body to focus on digesting food rather than eliminating toxins.
