Winter's chill weakens the body because it forces us to work harder to maintain the necessary warmth. This often leads to a compromised immune system, and the cold makes us more prone to infections. Winter illnesses are known as “acute diseases,” meaning short-term conditions with intense symptoms like fatigue, fever, mucus, inflammation, severe coughs, and more.
Addressing acute conditions can be simple and straightforward without resorting to chemical medications or antibiotics, provided you act quickly.
Feeling a scratchy throat, fatigue, or the onset of a cold? Here’s what to do:
1. Rest 2. Pause eating 3. Hydrate
Cut back on food intake when unwell because digestion consumes energy. By eating less, your body can redirect that energy toward recovery.
For drinks, mostly consume herbal teas that boost the immune system and have anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties, such as lemon verbena, chamomile, cinnamon, fennel, and mint.
Vitamin C is crucial. Consider a 1000 mg supplement and eat two kiwis a day, as the fruit is rich in vitamin C. It’s also worth taking herbal capsules containing echinacea, cat’s claw, black elderberry, and astragalus for extra immune support.
For sore throats, gargle with salt water, and take zinc lozenges, propolis drops, and sambucol tablets for relief.
To treat a cough, slice an onion and place it in a glass jar. Add a tablespoon of wildflower or eucalyptus honey, seal it, and shake. After two hours, a syrup forms; take a teaspoon every hour.
Another remedy is flaxseed: boil a tablespoon of flaxseeds in a cup of water for 5 minutes, then drink.
Additionally, mix a teaspoon of olive oil with two drops of lemon eucalyptus oil, blend well, and apply in a circular motion to the chest area.
For earaches, chop a garlic clove into small pieces and mix with olive oil in a cup. Add two tablespoons of lavender oil, place the cup in boiling water to warm the oil, and drop four drops into each ear.
For babies with ear fluid, avoid feeding them while lying down. Rub lavender oil behind the ear and massage downwards to help reduce inflammation toward the throat.
